Presentation Description: V&A Consulting Engineers ("V&A") and the City of Pomona ("Pomona") have been collaborating since 2023 on the use of data science and machine learning to manage and improve Pomona's gravity main cleaning processes and procedures.
The presenters will be Lars Stenstedt from V&A and Romell Eutsey, Wastewater Collection System Supervisor from Pomona. Lars has presented at the previous four CWEA AC conferences (CWEA AC 22-25) and Romell is a first-time presenter at the CWEA conference.
Pomona is responsible for the O&M of 317 miles of gravity sewer mains (over 6,000 segments). Pomona cleans its sewer system on a 18-month program with more frequent cleaning of identified hot spots. Pomona's multi-year path to data driven cleaning optimization will be presented.
V&A's first reports to Pomona in 1H 2024 detailed Pomona's data quality and historic cleaning and CCTV status. V&A's analysis is updated and expanded every three months for Pomona to provide recommended incremental adjustments and improvements.
A detailed case study of Pomona's two and a half years working with V&A will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
understand data science and machine learning processes and technologies as applied to collection system asset management and maintenance optimization.
understand the multi-year path, with tangible, incremental steps taken by a mid sized collection system like Pomona to fine tune and optimize gravity main asset management and cleaning
implement processes internally to identify gravity main segments that may not need to be cleaned as often as currently planned or scheduled.
