From Mystery to Clarity: Solving 1,2,3-TCP Challenges in Recycled Water

Presentation Description: This presentation will focus on the high positive detections of 1,2,3-trichloropropane (1,2,3-TCP) that were observed in final effluent samples at two locations. We conducted testing to trace the potential source of the 1,2,3-TCP and to understand why it was only detected after chlorine was introduced in the treatment process.
Through further investigation and collaboration with another agency, we tested a different column and successfully separated an unknown compound from the TCP. What first appeared to be a detection above the MCL was ultimately found to be a false positive caused by an unknown compound.

  • False positive detections can occur, and if results do not make sense, further investigation is warranted.
