Payal Sarkar is the Senior Environmental Program Manager at the City of San Jose, where she oversees the laboratory at the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility(RWF). The RWF lab monitors wastewater effluent quality to ensure public health and environmental protection in compliance with federal and state regulations. Payal leads the City’s wastewater based epidemiology program and has collaborated with Stanford University and the County of Santa Clara since 2020 on the WastewaterSCAN project, providing samples and metadata that supported the project's proof of concept in the initial days of the pandemic. This collaboration has led to the expansion and validation of the SCAN program for broader public health applications nationwide. A member of CWEA and BACWA, Payal holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arizona.
