Vice President B&K Valves & Equipment, Inc. Olivehurst, CA
Workshop Description: This workshop provides field technicians and water utility staff with the skills needed to perform in-depth maintenance on common AWWA valves. Participants will work directly with various valve types in a controlled environment, including resilient-seated butterfly valves, plug valves, check valves, and air valves. The training will cover best practices for safely isolating valves, proper disassembly and inspection techniques, and expert reassembly procedures to restore full functionality. Key topics include: Step-by-step disassembly and reassembly of valve components. Identifying common wear points and replacing internal parts like seals, packing, and O-rings. Using specialized tools, including torque wrenches and micrometers, to meet manufacturer specifications. Performing final operational checks and pressure testing to confirm valve integrity.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate between major AWWA valve classifications—including gate, butterfly, check, and air valves—based on their internal flow control elements and mechanical operation.
Identify critical valve components such as the body, bonnet, stem, seat, and actuators using physical cutaway models in hands-on breakout sessions.
Select appropriate valves for specific hydraulic applications, comparing the performance of resilient-seated gate valves (AWWA C509/C515) versus high-performance butterfly valves (AWWA C504) for isolation and regulation.
